Kilmartin April 2008

April 26, 2008

Hi Folks,

Suzanne and i were back up in Kilmartin last week, not only for the superb rock art, but also for my 40th birthday, god i do not feel that old. We were able to see some really nice rock art, standing stones, and believe it or not some glorious weather. My main targets were Blairbuie 2 and Poltalloch. Thankfully we found both, but i was especially glad to find Blairbuie 2, this did take us an hour or so to locate it. One thing that can be said is that Stan will be glad to know the yellow bucket is still there behind the tree..you do some weird things walking through forests. The photos from the trip will be seen on both BRAC & TMA

New Carvings at Achnabreck

February 21, 2008

Hi Folks,

Thought you might like to see the first images of the new carvings recently found after a storm three weeks ago at Achnabreck. The new carvings are only a short distance from the main carvings, and actually only 1meter from the cycle path that runs near the main carvings at Achnabreck. The carvings are rather faint, perhaps from an earlier period or have been exposed for a long time prior to the tree covering them over until the storm.

More of the photos will appear on BRAC soon.

HALF LIFE Mid-Argyll, 4th - 16th Sep 2007

HALF LIFE, a major new landscape work, is NVA’s first co-production with the National Theatre of Scotland. This remarkable event offers two elements.

By day the public are invited to discover a range of sites using a specially designed guide, from rarely seen Neolithic rock carvings to atmospheric hill forts . By night , they are transported to a forest setting near the ancient fort of Dunadd where the first Scottish Kings were crowned. Here, a powerful performance will take place on a vast sculptural set constructed from hundreds of cut logs. HALF LIFE promises an unforgettable outdoor experience in one of Scotland’s richest landscapes.

HALF LIFE will be officially launched and tickets available from May 2007. For further info please visit: www.nva.org.uk/new-projects/half+life/

Cave Art on the Isle of Mull

Visited this site with the good lady some years back I thought you would like to share our experiences

The island is famous for the multiple stone rows but rock art sites are few! One of the most interesting sites is Scoor cave on the Ross of Mull, located at the bottom of steep cliffs the entrance is not easy to locate within the rocks, nooks and crannies Carved upon the walls of the cave are early Christian crosses, a ship, Labyrinth and cup marks! The site and similar caves along the coast served as a refuge for early Christians, sailors and prehistoric man

The Temple Wood motif with its concentric circles have been one of the most difficult motifs to see and a quick scan through the Web photo archives can’t seem to find any current images of this motif! However after many years I managed to capture this image in the spring of 2005!
