Just added a nice series of photographs of Hawaian rock art to the Wordwide Rock Art Selection. The pics were taken by my daughter and son-in-law during their vacation trip to Hawai last September. The carvings in the lava are of relatively recent times (from of 1200AD). That’s probably why they have a handed down explanation for the cup and ring(s) as can be read on the second photo. There’s also a link to an explaintory website with, a.o. the following text: “Reverend William Ellis, a missionary to the Hawaiian and Society Islands, recorded the earliest written observation of the petroglyphs at Pu`uloa in 1823″. By that time Mr Langlands acknowledged the antiquity of the Old Bewick motifs. Small world! Enjoy….

We know that C&R’s were used as decoration in all Ages and Places. Here’s a rare C&R-decorated sandstone bead of the Hittite people (Anatolia, Turkey), dating back to 1500-1300 BC. The bead is yours for $ 1000. The right stuff to wear on RAM’10!

Recently, George Currie found another new and quite interesting panel in the Black Burn area, West of Urlar farm on the South-side of Loch Tay. It looks like this panel was part of  a larger design. Part of the motif -a relative small cup with four rings- has flaked off. A really nice catch, George!

Latest News: George Currie has seen the Light!

It was a frosty Autumn morning on the South bank of Loch Tay. The fog hung low and no sound was heard. George took his camera out and catched the spooky atmosphere. And there, suddenly, it was; a clear but unreadable Aura!  Was there a person visible? Was it Hutchinson, Anderson, Mackenzie, Stuart? We will never know. Only this story and the photos of the “Glory” survived!

Last week, I received the following from our Galician friend Jorge Guitián:

Hi,
I’m just writing to share with you all my blog about Galician (NW Spain) rock art. I’ve been researching Galician Rock Art since 1999. Nowadays my profession is not related with rock art research, but for more than a decade me and my father published more than 130 new rock art sites, mainly in A Coruña province.  I’m still interested in Rock Art, and we are still making some field research, but our work don’t give us many chances to conduct a systematic research.
Last year I tried to publish a blog, as a way to share my passion about rock art but, once again, work leave me without time to update it regularly. Last October, Stan Beckensall’s latest book “Prehistoric Rock Art in Britain, Sermons in Stone” was published by Amberley Publishing. Front and back cover are decorated by splendid photos, taken by the well-known Mr Brian Kerr. I already had the opportunity to look inside the book and there are many more fine photographs, among others taken by Stan, George, Brian, Ian and many more. With Stan’s authoritative text and so many photographs, this book should be on every coffee-table soon, even skipping the X-mas tree procedure!

Hi Folks,

Recently I received a couple of photographs from Pat Morrissey of some stones on the Eastern shore of Glensherup Reservoir near Glendevon (Perth and Kinross). He would be very happy to have your opinion about the status (man-made or natural) of the cup-like depressions.

For the location of the finding spot click here.

I think the cups on photo A, except for the “hole” on the front-side, come close to the genuine ones. The features in photo B, C and D are likely to be candidates for the description “natural”.

I know that it is hard to make a proper judgement from photographs, but I hope you would give it a try!
